As melanocytes differentiate, proliferation slows, whilst dendricity increases.

Total Melanin Content

Melanogenesis is a complex process, involving 4 sequential melanosome developmental stages, accompanied by several different steps of melanin formation and maturation, each cataloysed by a different enzyme.

An alterantive to the evaluation of a specific enzyme in this process is to quantify the total amount of melanin produced by the entire process.

Total melanin can be evaluated using a colorimetric method in 96-well plates.
